How to track spending without connecting your bank
Netmonth works with the statements you already have. Here's the routine, step by step, from download to dashboard.
1. Download a statement from online banking
Sign in to your bank's or card issuer's website or app the way you normally do, and download a statement or transaction export for the period you want. CSV, Excel or OFX files are ideal if your bank offers them; PDF statements work too. You never share your bank password with Netmonth.
- Look for Statements, Documents or Export
- Choose CSV, Excel, OFX or PDF
- Bank and credit card statements both work
2. Upload and review
Upload the file to Netmonth. Columns are detected automatically and PDF statements are read by AI. On the review screen, check the rows, fix anything that looks wrong, split mixed purchases and adjust categories. Transactions you've already imported are flagged, and totals are checked against the statement's balances when available.
- Edit any field
- Split rows into several categories
- Duplicates flagged
- Totals checked against the statement
3. Save and see your dashboard
When everything looks right, save the import. Your dashboard updates with income, expenses, the net result and spending by category. Foreign currency transactions are converted to your main currency at the rate of each day. If you imported the wrong file, you can undo the whole import later.
4. Keep it up each month
Once a month, download the new statements and repeat. It gets faster over time: category rules remember your corrections, and recurring items such as salary, rent and subscriptions are created automatically. Add cash expenses on the go with quick-add from your phone. Most months, that's just a few minutes of checking.
- Rules learn from your corrections
- Recurring items created on schedule
- Quick-add cash spending
- A few minutes a month
